“Setback for Loyola University’s Health Science Faculty: Medicine and Nursing Degrees Denied by Quality Agency”

A jug of cold water. There will be no degrees Medicine and Nursing in the Loyola University for now. The Agency for Scientific and University Quality of Andalusia (water) -formerly Deva-, belonging to the Junta de Andalucía (but independent in its decisions), considers that the degrees that the Jesuit institution intended to teach the next academic year do not meet the conditions required for said specialties. A response -to which the private entity will appeal to the Government within the established term- that shatters the plans set for the new academic year and that affects almost a thousand students who had already applied for a place in the Faculty of Health Scienceswhich has been under construction for months on the campus that Loyola owns in Dos Hermanas.

The new complex, which doubles the current constructed area, could lose two of its great assets. The Accua has not given the green light to Medicine or Nursing. Both degrees add up to a thousand applicants. At the press conference organized at the beginning of the year to publicize the new faculty -headed by Antonio Nunez (dean) and herminia romero (Vice Dean) – There was talk that an exam would be held on April 22 for applicants for degrees from the new center. In addition to Medicine and Nursing, there are Physiotherapy and Biotechnology, which have obtained the go-ahead.

As this media outlet has been able to learn, the setback suffered by Loyola in its expansion plans has been communicated through a letter to applicant students. It insists that the private university present before the General Council for University Policy (CGPU), a body dependent on the Ministry of Universities, a claim for the negative response given by Accua. From there, the CGPU has 30 days to resolve.

“The Board has not denied anything”

At Loyola they assure that “they will fight to the last breath” so that Medicine and Nursing are taught next year, although they acknowledge that they are “very tight on time”, since, according to the established deadlines, the final response from the CGPU may be delayed one month. They insist on not having charged anything for the exam on April 22. They also state that they have received several emails of support from prospective students after learning of the Accua report. “They are willing to wait another year,” they detail from the Jesuit institution.

Sources from the Ministry of University, Research and Innovation have explained to Seville newspaper that the quality agency’s decision is “independent” and that the Board “has denied nothing.” They emphasize that the Accua report is sent directly to the CGPU, which has to validate it. Otherwise, your decision is binding and there is no possibility of a response from the Andalusian agency. Just abide by it. It should be remembered that at the aforementioned press conference there was talk that the new Loyola faculty had closed an agreement with the Ministry of Health for student internships.

The news of this refusal comes a few days after it became known that the University of Huelva (UHU) will teach Medicine next year and in the middle of a crossover of accusations between the Hispalense (US) and the CEU on behalf of the new private university, the Fernando III, which is scheduled to start up in September 2024 in Bormujos. This higher education center also plans to host a degree in Medicine. Both those responsible for Loyola and the CEU ensure that the new health degrees are supported by the strong demand that there is for these studies in society, an interest avid with the pandemic.

A possible financial problem

The investment foreseen by the Jesuits in the new faculty rounds, as detailed in that appearance, the €30 million. A disbursement that could be affected by the denial of the Nursing and Medicine titles, since, for now, they could not have the money from the registrations.

Loyola University was the first private one to be created in Andalusia, when the Junta was governed by the PSOE. Now, with the PP in the regional Executive, two more are announced in the medium term: Fernando III in Bormujos and Utamed in Malaga.
