The storms which hit the district of Huy-Waremme this Tuesday, September 12 in the evening, once again caused flooding, particularly in Faimes. This was the case on rue Adolphe Brasse, opposite the municipal administration where significant mudslides occurred. “It was the roots and leaves of a recently harvested potato field that blocked the drains. However, these had been checked as a precaution”, declares Jean-Marc Delchambre, the Hamine alderman for Works. As a result, four house garages were under water. In Borlez, it was rue Albert 1er which bore the brunt, mainly cellars and garages.
A house evacuated in Viemme
In Viemme, on the other hand, the situation was more delicate since the occupants of a home had to be evacuated as a precaution under orders from the firefighters. “The emergency services decided that it was better not to take any risks. It is an old house where part of the foundations collapsed following water infiltration.” Authorities estimate that 30 to 45 liters per square meter fell over a very short period of time. “This is what caused the problem. Although our drains were operational and our teams and the villagers were very responsive, it was impossible to manage so much water at the minute,” explains the Hamineois alderman again. In response to this, new infrastructure will emerge in order to limit damage in the future, including a storm basin in Borlez.
Remicourt: 15 interventions
On the Remicourt side, the streets of Victoire, des Combattants and Joseph Wauters in Lamine were mainly affected, as were the streets of Hodeige at the crossroads located on Rue de Basse Voie. In total, around fifteen interventions by firefighters from the Hesbaye emergency zone were necessary in the Remicourt commune alone. “We want to prevent this type of situation in the future as much as possible. This is why we intend to analyze the situation with the help of a design office”specifies Thierry Missaire, the mayor of Remicourt.
