Severe Weather Alert: Thunderstorms, Heavy Rainfall, and Wind Gusts Expected in Belgium – Stay Safe with 1722

2023-08-24 07:30:27

The day Thursday will begin under large clearings, according to forecasts from the Royal Meteorological Institute (IRM). The cloudiness will then increase over the hours from the French border and sometimes intense showers will follow in many places in the afternoon.

These may be accompanied by thunderstorms with heavy rainfall and gusts of wind. More locally, hail may be observed. Precipitation accumulations will vary spatially, but may reach or exceed 25 l/m2 over a 24-hour period, warns the IRM, which issued a yellow storm alert for the whole of Belgium until Friday morning.

The maxima will still reach 23 to 29°C during the day and 15 to 19°C overnight.

Friday, the sky will be changeable or sometimes very cloudy with showers in many places. These will still be locally intense and stormy, in particular south of the Sambre and Meuse furrow.

In the afternoon, a fairly active line of showers could also develop over the northwest of the country. The maximum will be around 20 or 21°C by the sea, 22 or 23°C on the heights of the Ardennes, and between 24 and 26°C elsewhere.

The 1722 activated

The FPS Interior decided on Thursday to temporarily activate the number 1722 due to a bad weather warning issued by the Royal Meteorological Institute (IRM) until Friday morning. The 1722 should be used in the event of storm damage or water damage, where the assistance of the fire brigade is necessary. The number 112, on the other hand, should only be used for situations in which a life is in danger.

People in need of firefighter intervention can contact 1722 by telephone or via the electronic counter 1722.be, recalls the interior SPF, which recommends the use of the latter.
