Winter storm covers parts of the USA – snow warning even in Southern California

Thousands of flights in the USA had to be canceled due to a storm. The winter weather is particularly drastic in the north of the country – but people near Los Angeles also have to expect a snowstorm.
A severe winter storm caused power outages, closed roads and flight cancellations in parts of the United States on Wednesday. Meteorologists continue to expect unpleasant weather conditions for the coming days. In California, strong winds were the biggest problem.
They caused trees to fall and power lines to collapse. As of Wednesday afternoon, more than 88,000 electricity customers were cut off, according to the website PowerOutage.us. Highways were closed from Arizona to Wyoming. According to FlightAware, weather conditions contributed to the cancellation of nearly 1,500 flights. More than 3,800 other flight connections were delayed across the US.
In Southern California, authorities issued the first snowstorm warning in decades, according to the Los Angeles Times. It applies to the highest mountain ranges near Los Angeles. The last time such a warning was issued was in 1989, when a strong winter storm brought rare snowfalls to Southern California.

In other parts of the country, opposite extremes have recently been seen: from the mid-Atlantic states to Florida, record temperatures were recorded for this time of the year. The wintry weather mix primarily affected the north of the country. Schools in North Dakota and South Dakota, Minnesota and Wisconsin remained closed, as did many offices and the legislature in Minnesota.

South Dakota’s Republican governor, Kristi Noem, ordered various branches of government to remain closed in parts of the state. Employees worked from home.
Virtually every road in Wyoming was affected. The state Department of Transportation warned of multi-day closures amid a major winter storm. The situation in neighboring states was not much better. “Sometimes it’s impossible to keep up with Mother Nature,” said Wade Kadrmas of the North Dakota Highway Patrol.

In the northwest of the country, strong winds and heavy snow prevented search teams in the Cascade Mountains from reaching the bodies of three climbers who were caught in an avalanche on a mountain peak over the weekend.
However, two experts from the Northwest Avalanche Center hiked to the accident site on Wednesday to check whether conditions would allow a rescue attempt later in the week.
In Boulder Creek, a community in the Santa Cruz Mountains south of San Francisco, California, a 1-year-old child was critically injured when a redwood tree fell on a home, station KTVU reported.
