Shadows of Doubt: Washington’s Eroding Confidence in Netanyahu

The White House’s distrust of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government has increased in recent weeks as Tel Aviv carried out various attacks in the Middle East.

Four US officials told the Axios news site that Washington did not prohibit Israel from carrying out its attacks. But the US wants Israel to measure and consider each attack.

“Our trust in Israel is very low right now and for good reason,” said one of the officials.

Netanyahu’s subsequent decision to abandon a US-backed 21-day ceasefire proposal in Lebanon further eroded US confidence. This is like Israel’s decision to order all civilians in northern Gaza to flee to the south as the country prepares for a new offensive in the region.

US officials said they were concerned that the directive would trigger a potential siege and that Palestinian civilians would not be allowed to return.

“They tell us what we want to hear. The problem is a lack of trust,” one US official told Axios. (Z-2)
