Shailene Woodley Recalls Her Cut Mary Jane Role in The Amazing Spider-Man 2

Shailene Woodley has opened up about the surreal moment she learned her dream role as Mary Jane Watson was entirely cut from 2014’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Speaking to the SAG-AFTRA Foundation’s Conversations series, the actor recalled filming scenes with Andrew Garfield before discovering a year later that her character had been edited out of the Sony Pictures blockbuster.

The Disappearing Dream Role

For Woodley, landing the part of Peter Parker’s iconic love interest was a career milestone. “I was cast as Mary Jane for Spider-Man, which was my dream. Oh my god, Spider-Man’s my favorite superhero; Mary Jane was my favorite character growing up. So, when I got it, I was like, ‘This is so exciting!'” Woodley shared during the retrospective interview.

She filmed approximately three scenes alongside Andrew Garfield, who starred as Peter Parker. However, the payoff did not arrive as anticipated. Roughly a year after wrapping production, the studio reached out with a reality check. As Woodley joked, “That was a fun phone call.” The studio informed her, “So, you’re not in the movie anymore.” When she asked for clarification, executives explained that the narrative had become crowded with new characters, necessitating a pivot to focus entirely on the dynamic between Garfield’s Peter and Emma Stone’s Gwen Stacy.

Studio Logistics and Subsequent Pivots

According to Woodley, the production team offered a specific roadmap for her character’s delayed introduction. “They were like, ‘Let’s wait for her to die, and then we’ll introduce Mary Jane,'” Woodley recounted, referencing Gwen Stacy’s tragic arc. “Which made sense, but then they didn’t make that film. So, there was no reintroduction.”

Despite the disappointment, the actor maintained a pragmatic perspective on the ruthless nature of Hollywood editing suites. “That’s what I was told, but again, who knows what the truth is? I could have been terrible, and they were like, ‘We can’t do this,'” she said.

When the cuts were first made public back in 2013, director Marc Webb addressed the decision to The Hollywood Reporter, explaining that streamlining the narrative to spotlight Peter and Gwen’s relationship was the primary driver. “Shailene is an incredibly talented actress, and while we only shot a few scenes with Mary Jane, we all love working with her,” Webb stated at the time.

Franchise Fallout and Legacy

Mary Jane Watson had previously anchored Sam Raimi’s original Spider-Man trilogy, with Kirsten Dunst playing the role opposite Tobey Maguire. Meanwhile, Sony’s rebooted franchise leaned heavily on Gwen Stacy, portrayed by Stone, alongside Bryce Dallas Howard’s appearance as Gwen in 2007’s Spider-Man 3.

Following the underperformance of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 relative to studio expectations, Sony ultimately shelved plans for a third installment in that specific universe. Andrew Garfield eventually donned the web-slinging suit once more in 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home, appearing alongside Maguire. Garfield has since described that multi-Spider-Man crossover as “really healing” and noted that he remains open to reprising the role under the right circumstances.
