Sharp increase in bankruptcies in Wallonia and Brussels

In nine months, Belgium recorded a record with 7,800 bankruptcies. In September, the situation was calmer in Flanders, but Wallonia and Brussels saw an increase in declarations.

In September, 1,026 companies were declared bankrupt, according to Graydon. That’s only two more than a year ago, but this stability is only apparentsince Brussels (200 bankruptcies, +24%) and Wallonia (241, +17%) recorded a sharp increase, while Flanders saw a drop in the number of bankrupt companies (583, -9%).

This monthly observation reinforces the difficult trend of a year which had started badly, with the disappearance of Makro stores and 1,826 jobs who were directly dependent on it.

15,725 jobs have been affected by all these bankruptcies since January: 9,161 in Flanders, 4,045 in Wallonia and 2,513 in Brussels. In total, it is 33.51% more than last year.

The sector of la construction has experienced 1,605 bankruptcy declarations since the start of the year, another record. It exceeds the hotel and catering industry, which includes 1,386 declarations. Snack bars and restaurants are struggling, but fewer shutters have been pulled on pubs and bars compared to last year.

484 transport companies have gone bankrupt since January. Garages, with already 272 judgments, are also having difficulty surviving during this period.
