Fueling Young Minds: Shasta County Book Drive Focuses on Literacy
shasta County leaders are championing the power of reading by launching the Love of Literacy book Drive. The initiative, spearheaded by the Shasta County Office of Education (SCOE) in partnership with the nonprofit Reach Higher Shasta, aims to stock Little Free Libraries across the county with new and gently used books for children and teenagers.
SCOE staff emphasize the profound impact reading has on a child’s growth. “Being able to read opens the doors for all content areas,” explains Stephanie Byars, SCOE Director of Literacy Support. “If you struggle to read, then you’re going to struggle to read problems in math and all content areas… It helps them in their academic career, but also even after they leave school and they go on to their college or career.”
The book drive, running through February 14th, provides several convenient drop-off locations throughout Shasta County. Residents can contribute to the cause at Les Schwab Tire Center locations in redding on Hilltop Drive, Market Street, and Churn Creek Road. Additional drop-off points include the Les Schwab Tire Center in Anderson and Burney, as well as the Redding Library.

These community-based libraries are accessible 24/7, providing a convenient way for children and teens to access books whenever they choose. By filling these libraries with diverse and engaging titles,we aim to inspire a love of reading and make books readily available to everyone.
Archyde: What types of books are you hoping to collect? Are there any particular needs or age groups you’d like to focus on?
Stephanie Byars: We welcome all types of books suitable for children and teenagers, from picture books and chapter books to young adult novels and nonfiction titles. A diverse collection ensures that there’s something for everyone, regardless of reading level or interests. However, we’re especially keen on collecting books that reflect diverse cultures, backgrounds, and experiences, ensuring all children see themselves represented in the stories they read.
