Fueling Young Minds: Shasta County‌ Book Drive Focuses on Literacy

shasta County leaders are ‍championing ‍the power of reading by launching the Love of ⁢Literacy book Drive. ‍The initiative, spearheaded by ‌the Shasta County Office of​ Education ⁤(SCOE) ‍in partnership ‌with the nonprofit⁤ Reach⁣ Higher ‍Shasta, aims to stock Little Free Libraries across the county with new⁢ and gently‌ used‌ books⁢ for children and teenagers.

SCOE staff emphasize the profound ‍impact reading has on a child’s growth. “Being able to read opens the doors for all ‌content ⁢areas,” explains Stephanie Byars, SCOE Director of Literacy ‍Support. “If you struggle to read, then ⁣you’re going to‌ struggle to read problems in math and all content areas… It helps them in their academic career, but also ​even‍ after ‍they leave school and they ⁤go on to their college⁢ or​ career.”

The ⁢book drive, running through ⁣February 14th, provides several convenient drop-off locations⁢ throughout ⁣Shasta‌ County. Residents⁣ can contribute⁢ to the cause at Les Schwab‌ Tire Center ‌locations in ⁢redding on Hilltop Drive, Market ‍Street, and Churn Creek Road. Additional ⁢drop-off ⁢points include the Les Schwab⁤ Tire Center in Anderson and Burney, as well as⁤ the Redding Library.

Stephanie‍ Byars: We’ll be stocking ‌Little Free Libraries throughout Shasta County. These ‌community-based libraries are accessible 24/7, ⁣providing a convenient way ‌for‍ children ‍and teens to access books whenever they choose. By filling these libraries with diverse and engaging titles,we aim to inspire‍ a love of reading and ⁢make books readily available to everyone.

Archyde: What ⁤types of books⁤ are you hoping to collect?‌ Are there any particular needs‍ or ‌age groups you’d like to ⁤focus on?

Stephanie ⁤Byars: We welcome all⁣ types of books suitable for children and teenagers, from picture books and chapter books to young adult novels​ and nonfiction titles.
