She discovers a scorpion in her bathroom

On Facebook, the Thurgau cantonal police say they intervened in Warth for a scorpion in a bathroom. It is harmless, assures a specialist.

During the night of Tuesday to Wednesday, a woman living in Warth (TG) discovered an unwanted visitor in her bathroom: a scorpion. She then informed the cantonal police who sent a patrol on the spot. As posted on the police’s Facebook, officers “carefully wrapped up the two-franc-sized animal and took it to a specialist.”

The scorpion, which has already found a suitable place to live, would be an “Euscorpius italicus” (an Italian scorpion). “In Switzerland, this scorpion is found especially in Ticino. They are often in houses, on stone walls or in underground garages,” explains André Mégroz, entomologist.

The Thurgau police believe that the scorpion “probably somehow traveled as a stowaway from the south to Thurgau”. A theory confirmed by the specialist: “Often they are carried away in cars, camping equipment or luggage without us noticing”.

Finally, André Mégroz reassures. The Italian scorpion is harmless. It can certainly sting but its sting is comparable to that of a bee. He further explains that you can easily catch such an animal yourself, for example with a pot of yoghurt. “We must not be afraid of this species,” he concludes.

If it is not uncommon for the police to have to intervene for animals, “doing it for exotic animals or reptiles is not everyday”, says Michael Roth, spokesperson for the Thurgau cantonal police. Generally, they tend to deal with sheep, deer or cats. In 2019, a scorpion had already been discovered in the luggage of a couple returning from South Africa, and in 2018, a Japanese grass snake had been found in an underground car park.
