A 44-year-old teacher and mother of two was the victim of a septic shock following a flu. The mother had to have both legs amputated. She has just testified within the Mirror.
The first ones symptoms happened on New Year’s Eve. Julianna Brandsen experienced flu-like symptoms. After he went to bed, his condition deteriorated.
Despite the paracetamol, she cannot relieve herself. Her husband then decides to call 111, the emergency number in the United Kingdom.
The mother was admitted in hospital in critical condition. She actually suffered from septic shock.
She suffered two cardiac arrests following her flu
Julianna was placed in a coma for 18 days. The Englishwoman suffered two cardiac arrests and several of his organs have deteriorated. Her flu caused her sepsis. It designates a condition potentially deadly which occurs following the infection of the blood, generally by a bacteriumsometimes a virus or more rarely a mushroom.
The sepsis generated serious injuries to the hands and feet. Doctors were forced to amputate both legs. “It was a real shock. We had not realized the extent of the damage that sepsis could cause. Today, when we look back, everything seems blurry,” recalls the patient’s mother.
The mother, however, was able to leave intensive care in early March. She is now being treated at Withybush Hospital.
Sepsis: mortality rates are high
“She was able to speak right away. She was very weak, we could barely hear her, but we were so relieved that she was okay and was able to recognize us and talk to us,” her mother rejoiced.
Sepsis is a rare but possible complication following the flu. If your immune system is weakened or if the infection is severe, the biological processes that help your body fight infection can spread through your blood to other parts of the body.
The mortality rate linked to sepsis is relatively high, from 20 to 40% according to the studies.
