“Sheba continues to lead the way in providing healthcare without borders”

Sheba Medical Center, the largest medical center in Israel and one of the best hospitals in the world according to Newsweek for five years, announced that its Global Patient Services department recently removed the lung of a four-year-old Cypriot girl suffering from severe pneumonia, which saved her life.

When Maria was diagnosed with pneumonia in Cyprus, her parents did not expect her condition to deteriorate rapidly, requiring the use of an ECMO machine to keep her alive. Unfortunately, no such device was available locally, and Maria’s transfer was deemed too risky due to her fragile condition.

Maria’s doctors made contact with Sheba’s doctors, following which Sheba’s clinicians took a special flight to Cyprus, bringing with them an ECMO machine, and transported Maria safely to Israel for a more in-depth treatment. “It was very difficult for us,” said Nikolas, Maria’s father. “When we arrived at Sheba, we had renewed hope that Maria was healthy once more. Everyone was very kind, including Dr Rubinstein and Dr Sadeh, who explained Maria’s condition to us. It was clear to me that everyone cared a lot regarding her.”

After three weeks, Sheba’s team realized that Maria had an inflamed part in her right lung, preventing the organ from growing and functioning normally, and that surgical removal was the only viable option for her. help to breathe once more.

“Sheba continues to lead the way in providing borderless healthcare regardless of religion, race or ethnicity,” added Yoel Har-Even, Director of Sheba Global. “I am incredibly proud of the efforts to save the life of a young child and support an exceptional family.”
