On the track where Yoon Seong-bin (retired) wrote history six years ago, ‘skeleton prospect’ Shin Yeon-soo (Sangji Daegwallyeong High School) also wrote new history.

Shin Yeon-soo won a bronze medal with a time of 1 minute 46.05 seconds in the men’s skeleton competition at the 2024 Gangwon Winter Youth Olympic Games (Gangwon 2024) held at the Alpensia Sliding Center in Pyeongchang on the 23rd.

Shin Yeon-soo became the second Youth Olympics medalist in Korean sledding and the first Youth Olympics medalist in Korean skeleton history, joining classmate Soohwan Jae-hwan (Sangji Daegwallyeong High School). On this day, Shin Yeon-soo achieved his best time, recording 52.85 seconds (2nd place) in his first period. In the second period she recorded a time of 53.20 (4th place) but had no trouble winning a medal.

Shin Yeon-soo said, “It felt like a festival before entering the stadium, so I thought I would just enjoy it. I was nervous, but I cleared my mind and focused on sliding as I did, and the results followed, so I’m really happy.” “I am very proud of myself for overcoming it,” he said.

As a sprinter, he got into skeleton after watching Seongbin Yoon, who won the gold medal at the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics. He left his hometown, Hwaseong, Gyeonggi-do, and entered Sangji Daegwallyeong High School in Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province. After working as a player, I received a lot of advice from Jeong Seung-gi (Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province Office), a ‘skeleton star’ and a senior at Sangji Daegwallyeong High School. He said, “Ahead of this competition, I asked Jeong Seung-gi a lot of questions while he was in Korea,” and added, “I remember there was a section where I had particular difficulties and I was able to solve it with help.”

After crossing the finish line that day, Shin Yeon-soo was the first to hug her family. He said, “It’s been about three years since I started sledding seriously, and his parents came to watch the race for the first time today. “After it was over, I thought about my family a lot,” he said. Shin Yeon-soo’s next goal is an adult Olympic medal. He said, “I will not rest on my laurels and plan to use this medal as a stepping stone to train harder. “I think we still have a long way to go,” he said, expressing his determination.
