Shipbuilding industry Daewoo Shipbuilding’s subcontractor union strike must be stopped… Please use public power

Shipbuilding Offshore Plant Association’s appeal… “The need for investigation and enforcement of illegal acts”

The shipbuilding industry urged the union of the subcontractors of Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering, which is on strike while occupying the dock (the space where ships are built) in the Okpo Shipyard in Geoje, Gyeongnam, to stop illegal activities and start negotiations.

In addition, the government has requested a thorough investigation into illegal acts and law enforcement while injecting public power at the scene of the strike.

The Korea Offshore & Shipbuilding Association, representing the shipbuilding industry, said in an appeal distributed on the 19th, “In order for the Korean shipbuilding industry to solidify its status in difficult times, we must unite once again.”

The association criticized, “After a long order cliff, orders from the domestic shipbuilding industry are increasing due to the increase in demand for eco-friendly ships from the fourth quarter of 2020.

“It is the first time in the history of the Korean shipbuilding industry that the launch has been delayed,” he added.

The association said, “Only 120 workers, or 1.1% of the workers of in-house partner companies, are participating in this strike, but many workers are threatened with livelihoods due to illegal acts such as occupation of production facilities.” “The domestic shipbuilding industry will face a crisis in which it is unclear whether it will survive,” he warned.

The association demanded that subcontractor unions stop strikes according to the court’s judgment, and that the government should thoroughly enforce the law.

The association said, “We urge the subcontractor union to accept the Changwon District Court’s eviction order to stop illegal activities and engage in negotiations. We need to conduct an investigation and law enforcement,” he said.

Since the 2nd of last month, the Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering subcontracting union has occupied the largest of the five docks at the Okpo Shipyard in Geoje, Gyeongnam, and has been blocking the construction work.
