Mexico, where acts of violence are legion, was in a state of shock on Wednesday after images of the alleged murder of five young people kidnapped last week in the west of the country were broadcast on social networks.

A photo and a video are being authenticated, with the relatives of young people aged 19 to 22, kidnapped last Friday evening on their way to a party, in the state of Jalisco, one of the strongholds of drug trafficking.

In the photograph, five young people are kneeling with their hands tied and in the video, one of them is attacked with a knife, in the middle of the others lying on the ground.

The families “consider that there are strong possibilities (…) that it is their relatives”, said the prosecutor in charge of the investigation, Blanco Trujillo, during a press conference on Tuesday. .

The prosecution on Wednesday cordoned off the site of a farm where bloodstains and shoes were found, “suggesting that the five young people were” at the scene, according to its press release.

Two vehicles, belonging to the victims, were found, one of which was burnt down, in which a body was discovered.

Declaring herself in mourning, the candidate for the nomination of the opposition for the presidential election of 2024, senator Xóchitl Gálvez announced to suspend her campaign for 24 hours “out of respect for the families”.

By contrast, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador on Wednesday evaded reporters’ questions about the case during his morning conference, earning him fierce criticism on social media.

It’s “obviously linked to organized crime,” Jalisco Governor Enrique Alfaro said on Platform X (formerly Twitter).

“We are facing irrational, violent and direct attacks on the stability of Jalisco and which demand a reaction from the Mexican state,” he added.

Mexico has recorded more than 420,000 murders and at least 100,000 missing since a military offensive launched against the cartels in 2006.
