A few days after Ishmael’s arrest for the murder of his mother, Maria Verdoolaege (74), tongues are loosened. The man, in fact, killed his mother on July 10 in their accommodation on rue Grand-Vinâve in Jemeppe (Seraing) before cutting her into pieces. On July 25, part of the body of the septuagenarian, her four limbs and the saw that was used to dismember her, were found in a fridge floating on the waters of the Albert Canal in Oupeye. The next day, the police discovered his trunk and his head in a smart container which was still in the Meuse near Wandre. A container that belonged to Maria’s neighbor, but the latter was cleared. Suspicion then fell on the victim’s son…
“My daughter and I were aware that Ishmael had killed Mom,” Ishmael’s sister told SudInfo. “He told us that he had killed her then cut her up before throwing the body into the Meuse. He then threatened to buy a new freezer and do the same with us if we told anyone about it.
“When the police came to our house the second time, after discovering the freezer in the Albert Canal with Grandma’s remains, we confessed everything,” adds the 14-year-old niece of the alleged murderer. “Mom and I wanted to tell them the truth but we were so scared.”

Arrested in a hotel not far from Zaventem airport where Ishmael was to fly to Korea, the man confessed the unthinkable. Ishmael thus explained that he was bullied and humiliated by his mother since his earliest childhood. On July 10, mother and son argued again and there, as Ishmael explains, the son had a blood stroke. He threw himself on his mother and strangled her. He was placed under arrest warrant for murder.
“I don’t agree when he says that mum was harassing him,” says Maria’s daughter. “(…) He cooked at home and mum always said it was good but sometimes it lacked a bit of seasoning. We don’t kill and we don’t cut someone up for a little salt and pepper anyway.”
