Shohei Ohtani’s Spectacular 36th Home Run & Final Home Game: Angels Vs. Pirates Recap

ANAHEIM — Shohei Ohtani hit his major league-leading 36th home run in the superstar’s final home game at bat and on the mound before the trade deadline, and the Los Angeles Angels capped off a solid homestand with a 7-5 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Sunday.

Ohtani hit a drive to deep center field in the first inning to add 24 homers in his last 45 games. Only five other major leaguers entered Sunday with 24-plus home runs all season, but Ohtani has rekindled his June power after the All-Star break with four home runs during the Angels’ nine-game stay.

Fans left Angel Stadium uncertain if they’ll ever see Ohtani in home uniform again, though the Angels’ recent success appears to lessen the chances of a trade. Team owner “Arte” Moreno must decide whether to risk losing Ohtani to free agency this winter.

For the Angels, Venezuelans Luis Rengifo 4-2 with two runs scored and two RBIs, and Eduardo Escobar 4-1 with one RBI.

For the Pirates, the Dominicans Carlos Santana 5-2 with two RBIs, Liover Peguero 4-1 with a run scored and an RBI, and Endy Rodríguez 1-0.
