Shopify reported a 34% surge in second-quarter revenue to reach $3.58 billion, driven by rapid adoption of its AI tools and broad-based growth across subscription and merchant services. The stronger-than-expected financial results and upbeat third-quarter forecast sent company shares soaring over 17% in midday trading.
Shopify delivered a sweeping beat across all key financial metrics for the second quarter, dispelling Wall Street concerns that artificial intelligence competition and ballooning infrastructure costs would compress profit margins. The Ottawa-headquartered e-commerce platform posted gross operating profit of $1.708 billion, up 31% year-over-year, while adjusted earnings per share rose to $0.42 to surpass analyst estimates of $0.40. Gross merchandise volume—the total value of goods sold across the platform—climbed 32% to $115.57 billion.
AI Tools and Merchant Expansion Drive Revenue Surge
The robust financial performance reflects accelerating demand across Shopify’s core business segments, with merchant solutions climbing 37% to $2.78 billion and subscription solutions growing 22% to $802 million. Free cash flow reached $654 million, generating an 18% margin that comfortably exceeded year-ago levels. Company executives credited the broad-based momentum to steady gains across every merchant size, channel, and geographic region.

“This was a monster quarter: more than 30% growth in GMV AND revenue AND gross profit AND free cash flow. We power every kind of business, and with AI, we’re expanding what’s possible for all of them.”
Harley Finkelstein, President of Shopify
Company leadership emphasized that artificial intelligence integration has shifted from a competitive threat into a primary growth engine. Strategic partnerships with OpenAI, Google, and Microsoft have allowed retailers on the platform to reach wider audiences through AI search queries and conversational shopping assistants. Daily active merchants using Shopify’s Sidekick AI assistant surged 3.6 times year-over-year, while total Sidekick sessions increased nearly fivefold.
Disproving the Bear Thesis on Margin Pressure
Ahead of the earnings release, market analysts had questioned whether rising cloud infrastructure expenses and emerging automated shopping tools from rivals such as Meta Platforms would erode Shopify’s competitive moat. Equity analysts noted that the strong financial disclosures systematically dismantled those bearish assumptions.

The market had braced for decelerating top-line growth accompanied by margin compression from AI investments. Instead, operating income jumped 68% to $488 million, while operating leverage preserved the company’s financial discipline. Jefferies analysts highlighted that the resulting free cash flow beat and forward-looking margin outlook provided reassurance regarding the durability of second-half expansion.
Third-Quarter Outlook Defies Wall Street Consensus
Building on the June quarter momentum, Shopify issued guidance for the upcoming period that outpaced analyst projections. The company expects third-quarter revenue to grow at a low-thirties percentage rate on a year-over-year basis, outpacing the roughly 26% growth modeled by Wall Street consensus estimates.
Gross profit dollars are projected to increase at a mid-to-high twenties percentage rate, while operating expenses are slated to remain between 33% and 34% of revenue. With free cash flow margins expected to hold in the high-teens to low-twenties range, Shopify management heads into the autumn reporting calendar with clear operational visibility.
