Bernhard Reitshammer sensationally won gold in the 100 m individual medley at the European Short Course Swimming Championships in Otopeni. The Tyrolean was the fastest in the final on Sunday with the new Austrian record time of 51.39 seconds, followed by the Swiss Noe Ponti and the Greek Andreas Vazaios. Heiko Gigler took sixth place in 52.31.

In 2021, Reitshammer had already won bronze in the 100 m individual medley at the European Short Course Championships in Kazan. In the same year, Felix Auböck swam to the 400 m freestyle World Cup title in the short course in Abu Dhabi – until Reitshammer’s coup, he remained the last Austrian swimmer to win gold at a major event.

The 29-year-old Reitshammer was not inconvenient when Thomas Ceccon was disqualified in the semi-finals. The multiple world and European champion from Italy was accused of making a turning error. The Brit Joe Litchfield, who swam the fastest time in the semifinals with 52.16, was no longer able to improve significantly. He only reached fifth place.

Reitshammer secured the second OSV medal at the European Championships in Romania. On Saturday, Lena Kreundl won bronze in the 200 m individual medley. Later on Sunday (6:34 p.m. CET) Krauler Auböck also has a chance of winning precious metal over the 800 m distance.

There was only one Austrian at the start in the morning session on Sunday. Lena Opatril swam the 400 m freestyle in 4:12.72 minutes to 19th place and was eliminated in the preliminary round.
