Having won the trust of global consumers, shrimp products in Vietnam now enjoy a new advantage as farming areas have obtained production unit codes and quality certificates, including VietGAP (Good Practice Vietnam) and GlobalGAP (Global Good Agricultural Practices). This will help the sector achieve its export target this year of USD 4.3 billion.

Some experts said that under the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement, import duties on most Vietnamese products, including shrimp products, will be phased out gradually. The agreement provided a legal basis and also an opportunity for companies to promote sound and fair operations in European countries.

In addition, the success of entering demanding markets is also partly attributed to the development of ecological and organic products.

The shrimp sector has played an important role in the country’s aquatic product exports over the past five decades, accounting for 45% to 50% of the country’s total annual aquatic product export value.

Vietnam has become one of the world’s leading shrimp exporters with an export value accounting for 13% to 14% of the global shrimp export value. Last year, Vietnam earned 4.3 billion USD from the export of shrimp, up 11% year-on-year. Vietnamese shrimp products were sold in 108 markets.

By 2023, Vietnam aims to have 750,000 ha of shrimp farming, with a capacity of over 1 million tons with an export value of over 4.3 billion USD.
