Significant Reduction in CO2 Emissions in Flanders: A Closer Look at the Progress and Future Targets

2023-07-31 17:10:55

In 2022, CO2 emissions fell by 13.8% in Flanders compared to 2005, according to a new inventory of greenhouse gas emissions carried out at the request of the Minister for the Environment, Zuhal Demir (N-VA). According to Flanders’ climate plan, emissions should be reduced by 40% by 2030.

This is a provisional inventory. The figures will only be definitively confirmed in the fall. A breakdown by sector will then be available. Ms. Demir’s firm assumes that the decline is mainly in the buildings sector. In the 2021 inventory, which showed a decrease of 9.5% compared to 2005, the reduction concerned transport, waste treatment and buildings. Industry and agriculture still showed higher emissions than in 2005.

Sectors covered by the emissions trading system, such as large companies, are not included in the figures by country or region. Achieving a 40% reduction by 2030 will still require a major effort.

Demir, however, pointed out that a number of policies only came into effect last year, including the renovation obligation and the strengthening of legislation for businesses.
