A hundred people demonstrated in silence on Saturday in Antwerp, on the Green Square, to denounce a verdict considered insufficient in the case of Sanda Dia, the student who died following a baptism activity in 2018.

A call for demonstration was launched on the internet on Friday to organize this demonstration against the judicial system. We don’t know who the organizers are.

The Antwerp Court of Appeal on Friday acquitted the 18 defendants, members of the Reuzegom student circle of KU Leuven, of the administration of harmful substances and culpable negligence. They were, however, sentenced to 200 to 300 hours of community service for manslaughter, degrading treatment and breaches of animal welfare laws.

On December 5, 2018, the Reuzegom circle organized a baptism event in which Sanda Dia, a 20-year-old student, and two other blues took part. The activity began in Louvain and continued in a chalet in Vorselaar, where the victim had to stay for several hours in an icy well. The young man’s state of health had deteriorated significantly after ingesting alcohol and fish oil. The victim died two days later in hospital.
