A week after his monster jump of 8.45 m, Simon Ehammer (22) manages the next flight over the 8-meter mark: At the Diamond League meeting in Rabat (Morocco), the Swiss jumps to 8.13 m.
The Appenzeller confirms that as a decathlete he has finally made it into the world class among the long jump specialists. In the excellent field, only Olympic champion Militadis Tentoglou (24) is better: The Greek uses the favorable tailwind for his jump for a distance of 8.27 m.
Means: Ehammer flies straight onto the podium in his second Diamond League meeting! He is the second Swiss to succeed in this feat – hurdles star Kariem Hussein (33) won over 400 m hurdles at Athletissima in Lausanne in 2017.
Del Ponte improves own time
Meanwhile, big names have to admit defeat to the Swiss: Tokyo bronze medalist Maykel Masso (Cuba), for example, who finished third with 8.08 m.
Ajla Del Ponte (25) doesn’t come close to the podium over 100 m. But the Ticino is still feeling her way to the top of the world after her injury break, with 11.42 seconds she is around three tenths faster than when she made her debut in the Diamond League this season in Birmingham (GB). Victory in the women’s 100m sprint goes to Elaine Thompson-Herah in 10.83s.
