SIMS Foundation Reopens Doors, Offering New Path to Mental Healthcare for Austin Musicians

After a three-month pause due to financial challenges, the SIMS Foundation has restarted operations, providing renewed access to mental health care for Austin’s vibrant music scene.

The SIMS Foundation, a cornerstone for musicians facing mental health struggles, faced a difficult decision last fall to temporarily suspend services to raise funds and transition to a new service model.

“we just couldn’t be more thankful for the community to really rally to our support and understand the challenges that we were under, and they came to our aid,” said derrick Lesnau, CEO of the SIMS Foundation. “And we just are vrey, very lucky to live in a community that understands [our] importance …and why we need to continue to be around and be a resource for our music community.”

The organization successfully reached its fundraising goal of $500,000, allowing it to resume providing essential services.

Though, the SIMS Foundation’s approach has evolved. While they will continue to offer some financial assistance for mental health care, they are now encouraging clients to enroll in plans through Sendero, Central Health’s low-cost insurance provider.

This shift has sparked concern among musicians who relied on the SIMS Foundation’s discounted rates. Stephen Savage,an Austin musician, expresses his apprehension, stating, “I feel like, because you’re taking away a critical service, you’re taking away something that people depend on,… they have a lot to answer for. I don’t know if we’re ever going to get those answers. If SIMS is the organization I want them to be,they would.”

Savage, who found alternative coverage through the Health Alliance for Austin Musicians, worries about the long-term impact of this change on the austin music community. “I would love for [SIMS] to continue doing what they were doing prior, but I’m really, really scared for the whole Austin community that they provide for,” he said.”There’s now just gonna be a big hole.”

lesnau acknowledges the community’s anxieties but emphasizes the necessity of the changes. “Now begins the work of just regaining trust and regaining confidence in who we are and why we’re here and how we’re connecting our members to care,” he said. “We want to be here for 30 more years, so … some of these changes were necesary to make that a possibility.”

The SIMS Foundation’s commitment to serving the Austin music community remains strong. While the path forward may look different, the organization is dedicated to ensuring musicians have access to the mental health support they need to thrive.
