Singapore Man Sentenced to Life Imprisonment for Torturing and Murdering Younger Sister

Huang Bocan, a 34-year-old man in Singapore, was sentenced to life imprisonment on November 5, 2026, after being convicted of murdering his 19-year-old sister, Huang Baoying, following months of systematic starvation, confinement, and brutal abuse in a Clementi flat, Channel NewsAsia reported.

A Childhood Defined by Caregiving and Scholarly Promise

Years before the High Court handed down the life sentence, his parents remembered a completely different son. Growing up, Huang helped look after his younger sister, tutoring her at night and assisting with her studies. Their mother recalled how a young Huang would accompany their nanny to bring his baby sister home, helping care for her when she was not even a year old. Factory workers who labored long hours, the parents trusted their son implicitly. Outside the home, Huang excelled academically, graduating from polytechnic with a strong GPA of 3.9 before earning a scholarship to study a computer-related degree at Nanyang Technological University, as Mothership noted. His parents, who described him as a mature person with a “kind heart,” noted he often performed volunteer work overseas, including building toilets in Chiang Mai, Thailand. A family friend added that the siblings were once very close, with Huang frequently taking his sister out to buy drinks.

The Descent into a Health Products Club and Fatal Isolation

The family dynamic fractured in 2018 when Huang, his sister Baoying, and a woman named Chee Mei Wan met through a nutritional health products company selling Herbalife goods, according to court documents cited by the South China Morning Post. The group met through Chee’s company, Colourful Nutrifit, which she referred to as a club. Chee, who was married, began a romantic relationship with Huang in September 2018. As the business ties deepened, financial strain emerged. The siblings fell out with their father over spending roughly $1,000 to $2,000 a month on the company’s products. By July 2020, Baoying and Huang moved into the Clementi West Street 1 home of Lim Peng Tiong, another member of the group, with Chee joining them later. Following the move, the siblings cut off communication with their parents, refusing to answer calls or messages.

Victim Endured Months of Confinement and Starvation

What began as a domestic rift devolved into brutal captivity. From February to May 2021, Huang, Chee, and Lim established a WhatsApp chat group to monitor and report Baoying’s supposed mistakes. Prosecutors described the ensuing months as full-blown torture. The victim was confined to a toilet, chained, severely beaten, and deprived of food. As a form of punishment, she was restricted to one meal a day to teach her to be “grateful for her food,” and between April and May 2021, she was denied all food, allowed only water. In one instance, the number of blows she received reached 240. Even as her health failed, she was forced to perform physical exercises like squats and hand raises. By the time emergency services were called on May 5, 2021, Baoying weighed just 27.6 kilograms, having lost 43 percent of her body weight due to severe malnutrition, sepsis, and excessive blunt force trauma. After Huang called for medical help at 6:02 a.m., paramedics found him performing CPR on his sister, but she was pronounced dead shortly after.

Judge Delivers Sentence While Co-Accused Faces Pending Case

High Court judge Aidan Xu delivered the sentence, telling Huang that his sister would have looked up to him for protection rather than being treated as less than human. Justice Xu remarked, Baoying would have looked up to you, she would have sought your protection and nurturing, and she would have cared for you. He further stated, This is something he has to carry for the rest of his life. Lim Peng Tiong was previously sentenced to 14 years and 11 months’ jail in May for his role, while Chee’s case remains pending before the courts. Following the nearly three-hour hearing, Huang’s parents were granted permission to speak with their son. Separated by a glass barrier, they spoke for roughly 10 minutes, where Huang advised his elderly parents to take care of themselves, while his father urged him to use his time in prison to perform good deeds.
