Singer-songwriter Mark Lanegan dies at 57

Brutal shock in contemporary rock. Mark Laneganthe most cavernous voice of the Seattle scene, a prominent figure in grunge who has been a member of Screaming Trees, Queens of the Stone Age and ‘The Gutter Twins, has died this Tuesday of causes that are still unknown.

“Our dear friend Mark Lanegan passed away this morning at his home in Killarney, Ireland,” his family said in a Twitter message. “Dear singer, songwriter, author and musician. He was 57 years old and is survived by his wife Shelley.’ The artist was hospitalized in a coma for months in 2021 due to Covid, he had to overcome consequences such as deafness and difficulties in walking and captured the experience in a memoir that was published at the end of 2021 with the title ‘Devil in a coma’.

Born in Ellensburg, Washington (United States), Lanegan entered the music scene in 1984 as the leader of the Screaming Trees, who released seven albums until 1996. He would later be part of Queens Of The Stone Age on the recordings of ‘Rated R’ ( 2000) and ‘Songs For The Deaf’ (2002).

He released an EP and two collaborative albums with Isobel Campbell (of Belle & Sebastian), ‘Time Is Just the Same’ (2004), ‘Ballad of the Broken Seas’ (2006) and ‘Hawk’ (2010), and had other projects along with artists like Greg Dulli (Afghan Whigs) in The Twilight Singers or the Soulsavers in the album ‘It’s Not How Far You Fall, It’s the Way You Land’. During all this time he released thirteen solo albums, some of great impact such as ‘Bubblegum’ (2004) or ‘Blues Funeral’. His last work was ‘Straight songs of sorrow’, in 2020.
