“The donut is not a doughnut,” chanted the Austrian bakery chain Ströck a few years ago. How do they come up with this, some might ask, following all, the similarity of the donut to its round companion from the USA is manageable. Things look different on the smartphone. If you enter “doughnut” on the Apple keyboard, a holey donut pops up. It is a scandal that the pollinated round does not have its own emoji – in contrast to the Bavarian pretzels and the French croissant, the company was outraged. And started a petition under the hashtag #KrapfenGate. Over 100,000 people joined the demand. But not only that. The bakery designed its own appetizing donut emoji. Despite everything, there was no happy ending. The Unicode Consortium, responsible for the uniform coding of symbols, rejected the request.
