Six people from the same family, four men and two women, aged 24 to 73, were murdered in San José de Gracia, in the Mexican state of Guanajuato (center), authorities announced on Sunday.
The attack took place on Saturday evening shortly before 8:00 p.m. (2:00 a.m. GMT on Sunday) at a building in this town in the Silao department, where the bodies with gunshot wounds were found, according to the state prosecutor’s office.
“There are no minors among the victims,” said the prosecution in its report, while some media had mentioned the presence of a baby among the dead.
This is the fifth attack in four months in the department of Silao, according to the prosecution.
The state of Guanajuato, an industrial region northwest of the federal capital, has become one of the most violent due to an open war between the Santa Rosa de Lima and Jalisco Nueva Generación cartels.
These cartels fight for control of drug and fuel trafficking.
According to official figures, Mexico has registered nearly 300,000 assassinations since 2006, when ex-president Felipe Calderon launched a military anti-drug operation.
The current head of state, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, says he prefers a policy of “abrazos, no balazos” with drug traffickers (“hugs, not shootings”), but has maintained a deployment of military forces throughout the country. .
The government has even set up a new security body, the National Guard, created by decree of March 26, 2019 to fight organized crime.
