SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won and Art Center Nabi Director Noh So-young appeared side by side at the first trial of the divorce suit appeal trial held on the 12th. In divorce proceedings, there is no obligation for the divorced parties to appear, except for mediation dates, etc., but the two people showed up in person.

On this day, the Seoul High Court’s 2nd Division of Family Affairs (Presiding Judge Si-cheol Kim) held the first argument for the second trial of the divorce suit between Chairman Choi and Director Roh. Director Noh arrived at the court about 10 minutes before the start of the trial and headed to the courtroom without saying a word to reporters’ questions. Chairman Choi also arrived about 5 minutes later and entered the courtroom with his representatives.

The trial was held behind closed doors for about two hours. The court reportedly set the next date for April 16 and announced its intention to conclude arguments on that day. The hearing will end about three months after the start of the trial.

After the trial, Chairman Choi did not answer reporters’ questions such as “Why did you attend the trial in person today?” and “Are you in a position to accept Director Roh’s request for property division?” He left the court after saying, “It’s raining.” Director Noh also left the office with only the words, “I’m sorry.” The two entered and left the court in different ways.

Chairman Choi and Director Roh also attended the first and second mediation sessions of the divorce case held at the Seoul Family Court in January 2018. Director Noh appeared in person at the first argument preparation date for the appeals court in November of last year and said, “It is devastating that 30 years of marriage have come to an end like this,” and added, “I hope this will be an opportunity for the precious value of family to be protected by law.”

In December 2022, the first trial ruled that Chairman Choi must pay Director Roh 66.5 billion won in cash as property division and 100 million won as alimony. Chairman Choi’s SK stock split (about 1 trillion won), which Director Roh requested, was not accepted. Accordingly, both Director Noh and Chairman Choi appealed.

Director Roh’s side is said to have increased the amount requested for division of property from ‘1 trillion won worth of stocks’ to ‘2 trillion won in cash’ in the second trial. It is said that the divorce alimony was also requested to be increased from the existing 300 million won to 3 billion won.

Previously, in the process of preparing for the second trial, both sides argued with each other, saying they were “shopping for the court.” Chairman Choi’s side included two lawyers from the Kim & Chang law office in his representative group last January, and Director Roh raised the possibility of a conflict of interest as it was reported that the nephew of a judge on the court attended Kim & Chang.

In response, Chairman Choi’s lawyers countered by saying, “We trust the court, and the appointment of a lawyer has nothing to do with the change in the court.” The defense team said, “Court shopping was an action on Director Noh’s side,” and “Director Noh’s side judged that the court assigned to it (Gasa Division 3-1) at the beginning of the appellate trial was disadvantageous, and the law firm where a lawyer who is related to the court is affiliated. He said, “The court was changed arbitrarily by appointing .”

After an internal review, the Seoul High Court decided not to replace the court hearing this lawsuit.
