The snow board had come loose when the man from Styria skied down from the summit of the “Hühnerleitennock” over the northeast slope in open terrain. According to the police, the alpinist was dragged around 300 meters. He ended up lying on the surface of the avalanche cone and alerted the emergency services because of severe pain.
The ski tourer initially tried to descend into the valley on his own, but this was not possible due to his injuries. He was rescued by a police helicopter team and flown to the valley. The rescue took him to the Tamsweg state clinic.
Resuscitation in Montafon
There was also an avalanche in Vorarlberg on Tuesday. A 43-year-old ski tourer from Germany had to be revived in the municipality of Partenen (Montafon). According to the police, the woman was buried about 70 centimeters deep. She was taken to the LKH Feldkirch and is in critical condition. The woman was traveling with her husband, who was also hit by the snow slab but was able to stay on the surface.
The alpine-experienced couple from the Augsburg district wanted to descend from the Wiesbadener Hütte (2,430 meters) towards Ochsental when there was considerable avalanche danger (level 3) and then climb towards the highest Vorarlberg peak, the Piz Buin (3,312 meters). However, due to poor visibility, the couple decided to return to the Wiesbaden hut and chose the “Green Kuppe” as their route. There the 46-year-old drove in front of his wife into a north-facing slope that was approximately 30 degrees steep. As a result, it dissolved avalanchewhich reached a width of around 100 meters and a length of around 100 meters.
The 46-year-old was able to locate his wife’s avalanche transceiver in the area of the avalanche outlet and began the rescue effort. At the same time, an uninvolved ski tourer made an emergency call to the emergency services and then supported the man in digging out and resuscitating the 43-year-old.
