China is currently one of the benchmarks in terms of skyscraper construction. In the Pearl River Delta region there are more than 1,500 of these buildings. However, Dubai is recognized as having the tallest skyscraper in the world, it is the iconic Burj Khalifa with 828 meters high.

Hong Kong and Shenzhen

Hong Kong along with Shenzhen and Guangzhou form part of the burgeoning megacity known as the Pearl River Delta, which is home to more than 1,500 skyscrapers. Leading the list, Hong Kong has 657 skyscrapers over 150 meters and six over 300 meters high. Shenzhen follows with 513 over 150 meters and 16 over 300 meters high. It should be noted that Shenzhen was a small fishing village until the 1970s.

NY

In third position on the list is New York, the only city on the American continent in the ranking, with an impressive 421 skyscrapers.

Though it may have ceded its title to Chinese cities, the city’s skyline endures as a world-renowned symbol, featuring the iconic Empire State Building. In particular, while the Empire State Building enjoys widespread familiarity, it is no longer among the world’s 50 tallest structures.

This oasis in the desert has become synonymous with grandiose architecture and record-breaking structures, exemplified by it, which is the tallest building in the world today at 828 meters.

Guangzhou and Shanghai

In the fifth and sixth boxes are Guangzhou and Shanghai. Guangzhou is a large port city northwest of Hong Kong on the Pearl River, it has 254 skyscrapers over 150 meters and 11 over 300. Shanghai is the largest city in China and a world financial hub, it has 250 skyscrapers , five of them over 300 meters high.

Kuala Lumpur

In seventh place is Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia has 211 skyscrapers and five over 300 meters high. The extraordinary Merdeka 118 stands out, an infrastructure that will claim the title of the second tallest structure in the world when it opens in June 2023.

The list closes with Chongqing (205) in eighth place, followed by Tokyo with 200 and Wuhan with 183 skyscrapers. Of these last three cities, Chongqing and Wuhan have five skyscrapers of more than 300 meters each. In Tokyo there is no infrastructure that exceeds that height.

Looking at this data from another perspective, China actually has more skyscrapers on this list than the rest of the world combined. This is because the Asian giant has 2,777 skyscrapers, and in the rest of the world there are a total of 2,350.
