Former ski ace Lindsey Vonn suffers from sleep disorders. She struggled with sleepless nights throughout her career. Before the races, she woke up early in the morning with intensive training. “I tortured my body for many years,” says Vonn in an interview with “Blick” and continues: “But it was worth the price, I don’t regret anything.” The difficulty sleeping and Knee pain accompanied Vonn even after the end of her career. But now the 38-year-old feels “really, really good”.

Lindsey Vonn is one of the great legends in the ski circus. For years she dwarfed her competitors on the downhill. The 38-year-old American has a total of 82 overall World Cup victories, 43 of which can be attributed to downhill skiing.

Successes for which Lindsey Vonn gave a lot. “I tortured my body for many years, and now it’s taking revenge,” says former ski ace Lindsey Vonn «Blick» and continues: “But it was worth the price, I don’t regret anything.”

Ten years ago, the former speed specialist fell heavily at the World Cup Super-G in Schladming and tore her cruciate and medial ligaments. Vonn stopped taking painkillers. “It wasn’t an easy decision because my leg hurt a lot,” recalls Vonn. “My sleep problems also began at this time.”

Dead tired Vonn woke himself up on race day with intensive training

The pain in her leg prevented Vonn from sleeping, and she was also afraid. «As a top athlete, I was aware of how important sleep is. How was I supposed to do a descent the next day without being really rested? This fear took hold and, together with the pain, led to a negative spiral.” A negative spiral that she covered up with intensive fitness training early in the morning on race day, dead tired. “I had to wake myself up to win.”

And the vicious circle got worse in the years that followed. “I never got rid of it (the sleep disorders, editor). And after your career nothing changes, on the contrary.” The pressure to perform disappeared, but the pain remained. «I always thought that I could do it alone. In a perfect world I would have made it, but my world wasn’t perfect.” For a long time, Vonn shied away from speaking openly about her sleep problems. She recommends that anyone who cannot solve their sleep difficulties themselves “not have any inhibitions and consult a doctor.”

Vonn talks about her desire to have children

Vonn now feels “really, really good.” Compared to before, it is like day and night. “I am extremely relieved and ready for a new phase in my life.” A new phase of life with your own offspring? “I would like to have children,” says Vonn. It would be “wonderful” for her to spend hours on the ski slopes with her children.
