Slimming and lemon in coffee – What the experts say – 2024-04-11 18:07:07

A fat-melting magic potion that most people don’t want? But is coffee with lemon the secret to losing weight?

Cleveland Clinic nutritionist Beth Czerwony breaks down what’s really going on. The simple description of this drink says it all. The most common solution seems to be the juice of half a lemon in a standard cup of black (straight) coffee.

It just doesn’t taste good, which may also explain why a steaming cup of “coffee with lemon” doesn’t appear on coffee shop menus.

Also, don’t try adding lemon juice to a latte unless you like… curdled milk.

Sweetened iced coffee, however, has a culinary association with lemons in some cultures. For example, a drink called mazagran originated in Algeria nearly two centuries ago and remains popular in Portugal.

The weight loss claims are valid
The answer to this is easy: “NO”.

Lemons don’t have any special fat-burning properties, Czerwony explains:

“This mechanism of action simply does not exist. There is nothing in lemon juice that will… burn fat or a chemical bond to make that happen. Sorry to say, it’s not that easy.”

So how did this slimming “trick” with lemon in coffee come about? Probably due to similar claims for lemon in water.

Drinking a glass of water with a slice of lemon is often cited as a helpful way to lose weight.

However, it is not due to any secret properties that lemons possess. It’s more a result of the water filling your stomach without the calories.

Coffee brings a similar appetite-suppressing benefit, while also boosting metabolism with a dose of caffeine. But healthy eating plans don’t rely on coffee, with or without lemon, Czerwony says.

Are there any benefits to adding lemon to coffee?
Lemons have some good nutritional properties. Like many citrus fruits, they serve as a good source of vitamin C.

The citric acid in lemons can also aid digestion and reduce the chance of kidney stones.

People are always looking for that one “magical thing” that will make them lose the extra pounds on the spot. Chia seeds have been in the spotlight for a while. So are apple cider vinegar and grapefruit.

“I understand why these quick weight loss fads are becoming popular,” says Czerwony. “They are based on products that are natural, we all have them in our kitchens and they have some health benefits. Looks like they could work. But if these things were tried and true, everyone would have been doing them for a long time and been successful. The truth is, there are no quick fixes when it comes to weight loss.”

As for adding lemon to coffee for a better figure: “It’s not something I would recommend. So if you don’t like the taste for some reason, I would stay away.”
