SLN’s Tax Contributions and Economic Impact in New Caledonia: A Remarkable Increase despite Challenges

Despite difficulties due to bad weather and rising energy costs, in 2022 SLN managed to increase its tax contribution to New Caledonia. The amount of its taxes rose from 1.39 billion to 2.38 billion francs.

At the end of 2022, SLN indicated that it was on the verge of insolvency. In question, in particular: the explosion of energy prices. Combined with bad weather, technical problems and blockages, it cut into the cash flow. However, the old lady of Doniambo will bring 2.38 billion francs to New Caledonia in taxes alone. An increase of 71.7% compared to 2021.

Around 238 million francs have also been invested for the benefit of local communities. They were used to finance sports projects in favor of more than 300 young people from Kouaoua, the supply of drinking water to three municipalities in Thio with more than 100 residents, and the training of 72 young people far from employment, welcomes in a press release from the Eramet group, a 56% shareholder of SLN.

The company also spent 3 billion francs on local purchases and subcontracting. As for the payroll, it reached 18.24 billion francs. 3,392 people are directly employed by SLN. “In total, Eramet’s economic contribution in New Caledonia amounts to approximately 67.7 billion francs“, underlines the parent company.

The Eramet group, which produces mineral sands in Senegal, lithium in Argentina, manganese alloys in Norway and the United States, recorded record profits in 2022: 180 billion francs before taxes. In particular thanks to the Weda Bay nickel mines in Indonesia, which experienced very strong growth, and to nickel, whose profits increased by 60% in one year.

In 2023, SLN also hopes to return to growth thanks to a loan of 4.8 billion granted by the State. It plans to export 3.5 million tonnes of wet low-grade ore and 45,000 tonnes of ferronickel.
