Slovakia’s government faced fresh scrutiny over its spending on national celebrations and high-level diplomatic positions following central anniversary events in Banská Bystrica. Prime Minister Robert Fico defended his foreign minister’s controversial statements regarding Russia, while officials declined to confirm final celebration costs until all invoices are processed.

Concurrently, opposition parties raised concerns over expenditure thresholds exceeding 320-tisíc eur for specific programs, prompting formal inquiries to the Supreme Audit Office.

When questioned about the overall financial impact of the central uprising commemorations, Defense Minister Robert Kaliňák noted that final calculations depend on outstanding vendor accounts.

An estimated 15-tisíc visitors gathered around the iconic SNP Memorial and adjacent park by midday, navigating security checkpoints and viewing military hardware displays. The gathering featured appearances by war veterans Vladimír Strmeň (98) and Branislav Tvarožok (100), alongside performances by the renewed Jánošík Military Artistic Ensemble and singer Nela Pocisková.

Diplomatic Defend of Foreign Policy Stance on Russia

Beyond domestic commemorations, Prime Minister Robert Fico firmly defended Foreign Minister Juraj Blanár following remarks made during a state television discussion program. Blanár had stated a desire to find a path toward cooperation with Moscow and possibly forgiveness for all that has happened to prevent a wider conflict between Russia and NATO.

The statements drew swift international pushback, most notably from Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha, who argued that expecting a criminal to stop without punishment is naive and that those who have lost nothing in the war lack the standing to make such declarations.

Addressing the controversy, Fico insisted he had chosen a cabinet member from his political circle who holds independent sovereign views rather than merely repeating expected talking points.
