When the lights go out in the gym of the Sportmittelschule (SMS) Lambach next Tuesday and the performance begins, the students will not only show their sporting qualities: the gymnastics show, which takes place every four years, should always convey a message, says director Gerald Grecksamer. “In ‘Mathilda in search of the we’ we deal with social interaction, which is increasingly being lost, and with how it can be strengthened again. So something that we also want to live the whole school year,” says the headmaster who wrote the story himself.
On June 20th, 22nd and 23rd, starting at 6.30 p.m., the public can look forward to a sports show in which the students will present what they have learned during their time at the sports secondary school. All 172 students are on stage during the performance. There is rope jumping, dancing, juggling and much more. “The students are already looking forward to it and are correspondingly nervous. The aim of the gymnastics show is that they can perform in front of a large audience during their school days,” says Grecksamer.
Between the sporting stations, the two “chatterboxes” lead through the events as storytellers. On her journey, the protagonist Mathilda encounters various characters from history and the present: Mahatma Gandhi, John Lennon and Greta Thunberg. “So characters that inspire other people to dream,” says the director.
The three polytechnic classes are also involved: They made the hippie-style decorations, arranged the advance ticket sales and will act as ushers and ticket sellers at the performances. “So the whole school helps together. It takes a lot of effort and extracurricular willingness to prepare,” says the headmaster.
This intensive work will hopefully be rewarded by the audience: the director expects up to 900 visitors per performance. At the show gymnastics four years ago, 2500 guests came. “We are very excited and look forward to successful performances,” says Grecksamer.
