Soaring gas prices and higher tire and car wash costs… Cost of rolling a car 252↑

Tires 9.8%, car wash 8.7%, and maintenance costs up 13.2%
Transportation inflation rate of 14.5%… International airfare 19.5%↑
Government policy to curb increase in public transportation fares

As various vehicle maintenance costs, including gas prices, rise, the burden on self-drivers has increased.

According to the National Statistical Portal of the National Statistical Office (KOSIS) on the 5th, the consumer price index in May was 107.56 (2020=100), up 5.4% from the same month last year.

In terms of spending purpose, the transportation price increase rate was the highest among the 12 sectors at 14.5%.

Transportation prices consist of transportation equipment such as automobiles, operating expenses for personal transportation equipment, and transportation service usage fees.

This is the highest level in 13 years and 10 months since July 2008 (27.6%).

By item, fuel costs such as gasoline, as well as consumables such as tires, car washes, parking fees, and surrogate driving fees, etc., increased most of the incidental costs.

Fuel costs rose sharply for gasoline (27.0%), diesel (45.8%), and LPG for automobiles (26.0%) due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

The average gas station selling price in the fourth week of May reached 1,993.8 won per liter of gasoline and 2,000.3 won per liter of diesel.

The cost of maintaining and repairing personal transportation equipment also rose by 4.9%, led by automobile supplies (11.0%), automobile tires (9.8%), car washing (8.7%), and engine oil replacement fees (8.4%).

For other services related to personal transportation equipment (4.4%), surrogate driving fees (13.2%), car rental fees (6.3%), automobile school fees (5.3%), and parking fees (4.7%) rose, while road tolls and vehicle inspection fees remained the same as the previous year. .

The transportation equipment itself also rose by 3.5% due to changes in the model year of the vehicle.

By item, the increase rate was bicycle (12.0%), imported passenger car (4.3%), multi-purpose passenger car (3.8%), large passenger vehicle (3.0%), electric vehicle (2.4%), light passenger vehicle (2.0%), small passenger vehicle (1.4%), mid-size passenger vehicle (1.4%) passenger cars (0.7%), etc.

In the case of transportation services, public transportation fares were mostly frozen, but rose 2.3% as air fares rose.

Train, subway, and intercity bus fares remained the same as a year ago, while city bus fares fell by 0.5%.

Taxi fares rose 0.9%.

On the other hand, international airfare and domestic airfare rose 19.5% and 10.2%, respectively, and passenger fares rose 9.2%.

An official from the National Statistical Office explained, “The increase in transportation prices is mainly due to the rise in oil prices.”

The government is planning to curb increases in transportation fares in order to stabilize prices.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport held a meeting of the Land Transport Price Stabilization Task Force (TF) on the 2nd and announced that it would stably manage public transport fees such as road tolls and railroad fees for the time being.

The plan is to review the industry support measures so that the factors of cost increases do not lead to rate increases.
