In this month of “Dry January”, the Cancer Foundation is calling for a lasting break from alcohol dependence.

After “Dry January”, the Cancer Foundation’s “Sober Buddy Challenge” returns in February for its fourth edition with the ambition of bringing people together around a common goal: spending an entire month without consuming alcohol. This challenge between friends is not limited to encouraging a healthier lifestyle, it also aims to raise awareness about the harmful effects of alcohol.

Since its launch in 2019, the “Sober Buddy Challenge” has attracted more and more fans. Already, thousands of participants have taken up the challenge and, on average, “92.5% said they were ready to try the experience again.” The participants of the first editions demonstrated a notable improvement in their physical and mental well-being, highlighting the interest of such a challenge in our current society to effectively raise awareness of the benefits of moderating one’s alcohol consumption.

The Cancer Foundation, through the “Sober Buddy Challenge”, seeks to highlight the abuses linked to heavy alcohol consumption, a major risk factor for cancer and avoidable mortality, in addition to road accidents. It should be noted that in Europe, alcohol is a major cause of 7.1% of cancer cases and that “the risk increases from the first drink consumed”.

This year, the “Sober Buddy Challenge” Facebook page plays an even more crucial role. Volunteers will find tips, mocktail recipes (non-alcoholic cocktails) and information on the benefits of a sober life. To participate, simply join the dedicated Facebook group in order to motivate yourself as a group and thus maximize your chances of success. Other information is available on the cancer.lu website.
