Sofía Vergara (51) shone in her role as drug lord Griselda Blanco. The Netflix series “Griselda” is still in the top 10 of the Netflix charts in 83 countries a month after its release. In her role, the “Modern Family” star had to sell hot goods, smoke and snort cocaine herself. She had to practice that first, as she says.
Sofia Vergara needed tutoring
“It was unbelievable because at 51 years old I didn’t even know how to light a cigarette. “I’ve never consumed cocaine either,” Vergara revealed on presenter Jimmy Fallon’s (49) US late-night show.
Therefore, the Colombian-born actress had to practice. Director Andrés Baiz (49) showed her how to smoke and use cocaine. “The cocaine I took was fake. It wasn’t real cocaine. But I had to pretend. The cigarettes weren’t real either. Everything was fake. But the acting was real,” explains Vergara.
Coke from milk powder, cigarettes from herbs
The fake coke was milk powder, the cigarettes were made from herbs instead of tobacco containing nicotine. Before filming the series, Vergara practiced at home.
“I didn’t want to think about it while I was acting, so I wanted to do it before I got on set,” says the 51-year-old. Her conclusion: “It’s no fun. That’s why I wanted to do these scenes really well so I don’t have to repeat them 100 times.”
