But just imagine an application that was generated — including the code — by a GPT-4 system! As utopian/dystopian as this may seem, the situation not only happened, but the application is now available on the App Store. The person responsible for the feat (besides GPT-4) was the developer Morten Justby Otato, as reported by Cult of Mac.
It’s about the 5 Movies. Although simple, it is possible to see that the app is not completely random and can be useful in everyday life. Its function is basically to generate a list of five movies for you to watch when you are undecided. As much as the creation is not very complex, it is amazing to imagine that most of the execution of the developer’s idea was done by an AI.
Just reported the process on Twitter, which included describing the idea for ChatGPT, as well as pointing out what he wanted done. Then, the system generated the app’s code, which was very little modified by the developer — including with the help of AI to find bugs — until the software was published on the App Store. According to him, this is the first app generated by GPT-4.
He, however, was quite realistic about the creation, saying it was not a big deal. The developer also said that he does not believe that the use of AI will generate a large decrease in the number of jobs in the area — just modifying jobs, as well as enhancing the capabilities of small and medium developers.
In an interview with Cult of Mac, the developer recalled that code generation was not automatic, requiring a reasonable exchange of messages and error correction until reaching the final result. Regarding the use of the tool by ordinary users to generate new apps, he said that this would require greater attention to the construction of the code, greater caution on the part of Apple and user opinions.
Something important to note is that the purpose of the generated application — which is perhaps the most interesting aspect of 5 Movies — came from the developer. Thus, creativity, something fundamental for any innovation, is not given by GPT-4. Maybe when (and if) that happens is what we should be worried about!
