Solar eclipse: 3,000 glasses distributed free of charge in Charlevoix

This is what the eclipse could look like at its peak in Charlevoix on April 8.

A video shared by Jean-Michel Gastonguay shows the evolution of the projection of the Moon’s shadow on the Earth, almost completely blocking the sun.

The extremely rare phenomenon will begin at 2:20 p.m. and end around 4:40 p.m.

“For Charlevoix to have the sun which will eclipse approximately 97%, it is still a fairly exceptional event,” indicates the professor of physics, astronomy and Earth sciences at the CECC.

So that Charlevois residents can observe it, glasses will be distributed throughout the region from March 27. For example, in La Malbaie and Baie-Saint-Paul, it will be possible to obtain them in libraries. These holders will be able to contemplate the very first total eclipse of the Sun in the country since 1979.

“Yeah, it’s several thousand dollars. We decide to give. The region has been helping us in our scientific activities for several years, so it’s a small gift that we’re giving to the region,” he explains.

The Charlevoix Astronomical and Astrobleme Observatories remind us that citizens must take precautions during this day.

“The sunlight will be too intense and it can permanently damage the retina at the back of the eye. It’s really important not to look directly at the sun. There are things that can easily be found on Youtube. Otherwise with glasses, it is not recommended to observe it for 2 hours, it is just a few minutes,” specifies the science popularizer.

The protection also applies to cameras, which must have a filter specially designed to preserve an image of this eclipse.

Moreover, the Charlevoix School Service Center also received glasses to allow students and staff to watch the solar eclipse in complete safety. Classes are therefore maintained. Same thing for the CECC. Students will even celebrate this day.

“People can come and join in the fun. We wanted to play music outside and we’re also going to have a little sugar shack as well. We will ensure that students can have a truly unique experience,” underlines Pierre Beauchesne, information technician.

The next total eclipse in Quebec will take place in 2106.
