Drought, COVID-19, and the war in Ukraine add to the global food crisis.

The population at risk of hunger has more than doubled in just a few years.

In particular, in Somalia, a poor country in Africa, children are dying of hunger.

In a refugee camp in Dolow Town, Somalia, Africa, small graves that look like freshly buried are everywhere.

Babies are starting to die as hunger spreads in Somalia, Archyde.com reported.

The worst drought in 40 years without rain in four years has dried up crops and killed livestock.

Today, more than 6 million Somalis need help to survive, many of them children under the age of five.

There is concern that the catastrophe in 2011, when more than 250,000 people died of hunger, might recur.

“We need money to avoid the risk of famine. If we don’t act now with the money we need, we’re heading in that direction…”

According to the United Nations World Food Program (WFP), the number of people at risk of hunger has risen significantly from 135 million in 2019 to 276 million.

The unprecedented food crisis not only in Africa but also in the global village is the result of the simultaneous action of COVID-19, climate change, and the war in Ukraine.

In particular, the wheat supply chain was virtually paralyzed as Ukraine and Russia, which accounted for 30% of the world’s wheat production before the outbreak of the war, were embroiled in the war.

Africa is in short supply of at least 30 million tons of wheat, corn and soybeans.

“Even within the perfect storm, we are in a perfect storm situation. If we do not open the port of Odessa, the (food) problem will be more complicated.”

The African Development Bank has decided to provide an emergency aid of $1.5 billion to alleviate the impact of food insecurity caused by the war in Ukraine.
