Somalia has banned Chinese-owned social media platform TikTok and encrypted messaging platform Telegram. Somalia’s Minister of Communications has announced that it is taking action to prevent the spread of obscene content. In addition to these two apps, online-betting website 1XBet has also been banned.

Minister Jama Hassan Khalif said in a statement that he ordered the removal of the apps TikTok and Telegram, which are constantly being used by terrorists and immoral groups to spread horrifying images and misinformation to the public.

The move came after it was discovered that members of the insurgent group Al Shabaab were using these apps extensively for their activities.

The move comes days after Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud said he would launch a military offensive to eliminate the al Qaeda-linked Shabaab group within the next five months. Officials of TikTok, Telegram and 1XBet have not responded on the matter.
