TOKYO, April 28 (Archyde.com) – Sony said on Friday it expects current-year operating profit to decline from a record high this year as lower revenue from the group’s financial services industry offsets earnings made in its games, music and film businesses.

The Japanese conglomerate expects its operating profit for the year ending March 31, 2024 to fall 3.2% to 1.17 trillion yen (7.83 billion euros), which is lower analysts’ average estimate of a profit of 1.275 billion yen, according to Refinitiv data.

The improved performance of its games unit, however, is good news for the Japanese company, which has struggled to produce enough PlayStation 5 (PS5) game consoles during the coronavirus pandemic due to disruptions in the chain. supply of semiconductors.

Sony sold 19.1 million units of the PS5 console in the past financial year, up from 11.5 million a year earlier.

For the current fiscal year, the group said it expects profit from its gaming and networking unit to rise 8% to 270 billion yen. Profits from its “music” and “pictures” divisions will remain broadly stable, while profits from financial services will decline, according to its forecast.

Sony said its overall operating profit fell 7.3% to 128.5 billion yen in the quarter that ended March 31.

For the full year, its profit was 1.21 trillion yen, its highest annual profit ever. (Report Kiyoshi Takenaka, French version Augustin Turpin)
