Sony Pictures Classics to Release Award-Winning ‘Iron Boy’ in US

Sony Pictures Classics has officially acquired North American, Latin American, Indian, and Southeast Asian television rights for Louis Clichy’s critically acclaimed animated feature Iron Boy (known in France as Le Corset). Following a celebrated premiere in the Un Certain Regard section at the Cannes Film Festival, the hand-painted feature is slated for a New York and Los Angeles theatrical run beginning January 22, 2027, preceded by an awards-qualifying run in December.

The Bottom Line

  • The Deal: Sony Pictures Classics picked up rights for North and Latin America, alongside television territories in India and Southeast Asia, via international sales company Playtime.
  • The Pedigree: Directed solo by former Pixar animator Louis Clichy, the film took home the Special Jury Prize in Cannes’ Un Certain Regard and swept the Audience, Jury, and Distribution Awards at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival.
  • The Release Strategy: An awards-qualifying run is locked in for December, paving the way for a targeted theatrical rollout in New York and Los Angeles on January 22, 2027.

A Personal Vision Born from Pixar Roots

For Louis Clichy, Iron Boy represents an artistic departure from his previous work in major studio CG pipelines. Having spent years at Pixar animating on WALL-E and Up, and later co-directing CG Asterix features, Clichy takes the director’s chair solo for this deeply personal project. Co-written alongside Franck Salomé, the film relies on a distinct ink line drawing style that draws heavily on the spirit of manga and Clichy’s early short films.

That artistic risk paid off immediately on the festival circuit. Following its strong debut in Cannes, where international press and juries praised its watercolor-inspired aesthetic and emotional depth, the film dominated the Annecy International Animation Film Festival. There, it secured the Audience, Jury, and Distribution Awards before landing official selections at both the Toronto and New York film festivals.

The Story Behind the Brace

Set in rural France, the narrative follows 11-year-old Christophe as he struggles to measure up to his rigid, distant father on the family farm. A sudden physical affliction disrupts his life: Christophe begins to lean over and collapse without warning—whether he is working on the tractor, sitting at school, or dining with family. A local doctor diagnoses the condition, prescribing a rigid iron corset to keep the boy’s spine upright.

Forced to carve out a new existence away from the demands of farm labor, Christophe discovers an unexpected passion for music. He meets a new companion and quickly finds himself pulled into her world of youthful mischief. Yet, as the narrative unfolds, the film asks a harder question: can an iron brace truly fix what is out of balance?

The voice cast features Gary Clichy, Rod Paradot of Standing Tall, Brune Moulin, Dimitri Colas, Aurélie Vassort, Alexandre Astier of Kaamelott, and Jean-Pascal Zadi of Dog on Trial. Animation was led by Chloë Aubert under the art direction of Cécile Guillard.

Inside the Distribution Strategy

The acquisition was brokered by Playtime co-CEO Nicolas Brigaud-Robert. Speaking about the deal with Sony Pictures Classics, Brigaud-Robert noted that the film’s international reception surpassed initial expectations in both sales volume and critical reviews. Playtime, a Paris-based sales, financing, and production banner active since 1997, has built a reputation for launching high-profile international cinema, including recent festival contenders like Venice Best Actor winner The Quiet Son and Singapore’s Oscar entry Stranger Eyes.

For Sony Pictures Classics co-presidents Michael Barker and Tom Bernard, Iron Boy adds another prestigious international title to a distribution legacy boasting 42 Academy Awards and 192 nominations. The studio has a track record of championing distinct global animation, having previously handled releases for Sylvain Chomet’s A Magnificent Life, Mamoru Hosoda’s Scarlet, the Polish Oscar submission The Peasants, and Fernando Trueba and Javier Mariscal’s They Shot the Piano Player.
