Sony WF-1000XM5 headphones launch with improvements and higher price

A Sony finally announced the long-awaited wireless headphones WF-1000M5which arrive with improvements over the previous generation, but (even more) expensive than the 2nd generation AirPods Pro, which were launched last year by Apple and are its direct competitors.

Among the main highlights of the product is a huge improvement in the performance of active noise cancellation, to the point that Sony calls them “the best wireless headphones with ANC” available on the market.

Part of this result is due to the addition of a new integrated processor (the V2), combined with another that is dedicated especially to the treatment of noise cancellation in the device (the HD QN2e).

The addition of more microphones, in turn, allows the headphones to better handle low-frequency noise and also increase the quality of calls, which are also treated by Sony as the best quality ever.

With recycled materials in their construction (both in the headphones themselves and in the case), the WF-1000M5 are 25% smaller, 20% lighter and have the same water resistance certification (IPX4) present in the previous generation.

Another thing that holds up is battery life. That’s 8 hours from the headphones themselves and 24 hours if we count the duration of the case. This one supports Qi charging standard and needs only three minutes of charge to provide one hour of playback.

If the battery life has held up, the same cannot be said for the price. The WF-1000M5 cost US$300 — $20 more than the previous generation and no less than $50 more than the 2nd generation AirPods Pro.

Is it worth it?
