During the municipal council this Thursday evening, a point which did not commit the Municipality to much was discussed. In fact, it was simply a question of asking the opinion of the head of the local police force concerning the possible installation of surveillance cameras to combat the dumping of rubbish and other incivility. Nothing too restrictive, then. And yet, the subject still gave rise to discussion. And not just a little. “We are not the municipality most exposed to this type of problem, explains the mayor, Marc Tarabella. But we regularly collect cans. We found mattresses again a few days ago.”
And the least we can say is that the proposal encountered several opponents. Starting with Blaise Agnello (CIM) . “I find that installing such cameras constitutes a dangerous shiftdetails the opposition advisor. Couldn’t we strengthen the work upstream?”
Response from the mayor: “We do the work upstream. But there are people who we will never be able to make see reason. These are the ones we want to corner. And then, we are not in China . We are not going to install 250 cameras with facial recognition.”
Pol Wotquenne, “viscerally opposed”
On the majority side, the idea is not unanimous either. In addition to worrying about the practical aspect, “How much will these cameras cost? Who will maintain them?”asks Pol Wotquenne, who says to himself anyway “viscerally opposed to the project. We are weaving the rope with which we will hang our children and our grandchildren, he expresses himself. And then, I doubt the effectiveness of such a solution. The proof, an investigation carried out by a French research center revealed that this system did not work well.”
The last to speak out on this issue is Francis Hourant. “I am opposed to the project for a question of principle, for reasons of protection of democracy, advances the president of the council. We are letting artificial intelligence enter our lives. It’s both the best and the worst thing.” But the latter does not intend to vote against the point either, because “I would like to have an extremely detailed report from the commander.”
Normally, they will have this report. Because the council approved the point with the exception of Francis Hourant, who therefore abstained and Blaise Agnelo and Pol Wotquenne who voted “against”.
