Sophie Marceau Reacts to Patrick Bruel’s Sexual Assault Allegations

A Decade-Old Promotional Tour Under Scrutiny

French actress Sophie Marceau has broken her silence on the ongoing legal proceedings facing her former on-screen partner Patrick Bruel, stating that individuals must take accountability for their actions. Bruel is currently under judicial supervision after being indicted in June in connection with four separate investigations involving allegations of rape, attempted rape, sexual assault, and sexual harassment brought by approximately thirty women.

The high-profile judicial case has prompted a resurgence of promotional archival material from a decade ago, centering on the 2014 comedy film Tu veux ou tu veux pas directed by Tonie Marshall. In the film, Bruel portrayed a reformed sex addict who becomes a marriage counselor, while Marceau played his uninhibited assistant. During promotional interviews at the time—including an appearance on the television program Vivement dimanche hosted by Michel Drucker—Bruel made lighthearted remarks suggesting that the most difficult part of the production was resisting Marceau over the course of several weeks. Those remarks have drawn renewed scrutiny amid the current criminal proceedings.

Marceau Warns Against Retouched Imagery and Lost Context

Addressing the archival footage during a mid-September appearance on an anniversary cruise organized by the Arc-en-ciel association, Marceau noted that she had chosen not to comment on the jokes when they were originally made. If I had had something to say, I would have said it. I’ve already done it when I’ve been hassled, she stated, adding a warning about context. Let’s be wary of things taken out of context. I myself saw a retouched poster of this film where we are put in a very ambiguous position, which has nothing to do with the original poster.

Professional Estrangement and Demands for Justice

Confirming that she has closely followed the legal developments surrounding her former co-star, Marceau reflected on their professional relationship and subsequent estrangement. I’ve known Patrick for a very long time. Together, we only did this film and I got a bit angry with him at the end, but absolutely not for stories like that, she said. We’d been on the outs since and I regret it. But these women must be heard and justice must be done for those who ask for it.

Marceau Says Fame Does Not Authorize Abuses

Marceau suggested that the intense pressure of early and sustained fame can distort perspective, noting that it is difficult not to lose one’s head when achieving success at a young age, as Bruel did. But that doesn’t authorize committing abuses. You have to be responsible for your actions, because sooner or later you have to face them, she emphasized.

Bruel, 67, remains under formal investigation and judicial supervision following his indictments last June. The artist firmly denies all allegations and charges brought against him by the complainants as the legal process continues to unfold through the French judicial system.
