Sophie Turner Transforms into Lara Croft for Prime Video’s Tomb Raider Reboot

Prime Video’s upcoming Tomb Raider television series, created by Phoebe Waller-Bridge and starring Sophie Turner as Lara Croft, reimagines the iconic 1996 video game character through a modern lens. Currently in production following its 2024 greenlight, the series joins a slate of new projects including upcoming video games like Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis and Tomb Raider: Catalyst.

Production Timeline and High-Profile Casting Decisions

The Tomb Raider television adaptation at Prime Video has assembled a sprawling ensemble cast alongside Turner. According to reporting from Yahoo, the production features Sigourney Weaver, Jason Isaacs, Martin Bobb-Semple, Jack Bannon, John Heffernan, Bill Paterson, Paterson Joseph, Sasha Luss, Juliette Motamed, Celia Imrie, and August Wittgenstein. Phoebe Waller-Bridge, an Emmy and Golden Globe winner, steers the production as creator, writer, and executive producer.

Turner steps into a lineage of high-profile actors who have embodied the globe-trotting archaeologist. Angelina Jolie defined the character in two films released in 2001 and 2003, while Alicia Vikander took up the mantle in a 2018 reboot film. Most recently, Hayley Atwell voiced Croft in a Netflix animated series, Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft, which ran for two seasons until its conclusion in 2025.

Reflecting on the physical demands of stepping into the role, Turner shared insights on her rigorous preparation during an appearance on The Julia Cunningham Show. “We’ve been doing eight hours a day, five days a week, since February last year of training, so it’s been a lot,” Turner stated, detailing her transition into action choreography.

Navigating Franchises Across Media Mediums

While the live-action series builds its production momentum at Prime Video, the broader Tomb Raider intellectual property continues to expand across interactive and episodic formats. Netflix’s animated iteration, Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft, bridges the narrative gap between the Survivor video game trilogy—comprising Tomb Raider, Rise of the Tomb Raider, and Shadow of the Tomb Raider—and the classic superhero action-adventure tone of the original 1996 titles.

Showrunner Tasha Huo designed the animated series to explore Croft’s formative transition from an isolated lone wolf to an operative backed by a trusted support team, featuring voice work from Allen Maldonado as Zip and Earl Baylon reprising his role as Jonah Maiava.

Upcoming Interactive Releases and Narrative Horizons

Beyond television and streaming, the core video game series continues its trajectory. Developer roadmaps point toward two upcoming additions to the gaming canon: Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, slated for release in 2026, and Tomb Raider: Catalyst, scheduled to follow in 2027.
