The German soprano Ann-Kathrin Niemczyk won the 41st International Hans Gabor Belvedere Singing Competition on Sunday evening. The 23-year-old also won the audience award with a Wagner aria that she performed at the Dortmund Opera House. Second place went to Croatian tenor Filip Filipovic, third place went to Spanish tenor Kevin Jose Simerilla Romero.

The international media jury’s prize went to Neven Crnic from Bosnia-Herzegovina. Annie Fassea from Greece received the Hans Gabor Prize. As part of the final, 14 engagements or coaching sessions were also awarded at renowned houses such as the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, the Deutsche Oper Berlin or the Dzintari Concert Hall Jurmala, as the opera jury is made up of representatives from classical music institutions. There are no Austrians among the award winners.

The 15 finalists were accompanied at the gala concert by the Dortmund Philharmonic under the baton of Motonori Kobayashi. “The level of the finalists was consistently high this year, not an easy task for the jury,” said the organizers Isabella Gabor and Holger Bleck, who is currently in his last year as director of the Carinthian Summer, in a broadcast .

More than 900 young talents took part in qualifying rounds in 53 cities worldwide. 135 of them from 40 nations from all continents made it to the finals in Dortmund. South Korea was the most represented nation with a total of 28 participants. It was followed by Ukraine with 12 singers.

The Belvedere competition was founded in Vienna in 1982 and was launched around a decade ago due to disputes about financing.
