Sordid Street Fight in Brussels: 15-Year Prison Sentence for Gouging Out Eyes

This is a sordid story which took place in the streets of the capital and more precisely on the Place du Champ de Mars in Ixelles. The facts already date back to November 6, 2016. That night, around 3 a.m., Idriss A. and one of his acquaintances, Moestapha H., both aged 33 at the time, came to blows following a heated discussion on the political situation in Djibouti (a country located on the Horn of Africa), where they both come from. The fight is violent since Idriss A. will go as far as gouging out his opponent’s eyes with his bare hands. The latter, who will remain in the hospital for many days, will end up blind.

As Het Laatste Nieuws recalls, in March 2023, the French-speaking criminal court in Brussels sentenced the perpetrator to a sentence of 9 years in prison and deprivation of his civil rights for 10 years. The prosecution appealed, considering the sentence too light. As for the defendant, strangely, he also appealed directly, judging the sanction too heavy.

The Court of Appeal finally reanalyzed the case and on December 15, Idriss A. received an even more severe sentence, namely 15 years in prison and 15 years of disqualification. The Court of Appeal therefore followed the recommendations of the prosecution and declared, when delivering the verdict: “The facts are exceptionally serious and demonstrate extreme cruelty. The impact on the victim is enormous: the man is permanently blind”. The convict was immediately sent to prison after the final hearing.
